Our Smokefree School/He Kura Auahi Kore

A practical guide to being a Smokefree Community

Many Boards of Trustees and principals have asked for a practical planning guide to help them move beyond compliance and make their school communities truly smokefree.  The Health Sponsorship Council is delighted to let you know that this guide - Our Smokefree School/He Kura Auahi Kore: A Practical Guide to Being a Smokefree Community - is available now and it's free.  You can use the new planning guide to take small steps or make major change towards embedding smokefree lifestyles into the culture of your school.  It has been designed to give Boards of Trustees and principals practical advice about how to move your school and school community forward on its smokefree journey.  The guide contains programme planning tools plus a DVD, tips for working with community groups and families, as well as sample templates of letters and surveys.

Our Smokefree School/He Kura Auahi Kore was developed in close consultation with a wide range of people working in the health and education sectors throughout New Zealand.  The generous contribution of these individuals and groups has meant that the guide has benefited from the insights and practical solutions offered by people working in the school environment.  It is this input that makes the planning guide truly practical for your school.  Learning Media Ltd has produced the guide for the Health Sponsorship Council, with funding support from the Ministry of Health.

Smokefree / Tobacco Control

Tobacco smoking is the single greatest cause of premature death and disability in New Zealand.  It results in almost 5000 deaths every year, killing more than half of those who use it as intended.  The 2006 / 07 New Zealand Health Survey indicated the current smoking prevalence among people in South Canterbury is 25%.  However rates were significantly higher among Maori and Pacific populations.

It is a requirement by law to have ‘Smokefree at all times' signage at your gates and every external door within ECE'/Schools.  If you need Smokefree signage or are looking for smokefree / auahi kore or quit smoking resources, please contact our Smokefree Health Promoter or our Administrator for assistance on 688-6019 or connect to our website to see what resources are available www.cph.co.nz
